A Study on the Application of Goal Attainment Scaling in the Evaluation of Social Work Practice -Focusing on the Evaluation of the Program for the Improvement of Daily Living Function of People with Mental Illness

Abstract
Goal attainment scaling, as a helpful tool in clinical planning and evaluation, has a useful feature that can monitor client¡¯s individualized needs and process over time in the evaluation of social work practice. So it has been used widely in clinical research abroad. However, with the lack of the domestic empirical research, which shows the utilization of goal attainment scaling, it has not been applied to social work practice. In this study, with providing how to apply specific goal attainment scaling so that we can pursue the utilization of goal attainment scaling. For this purpose, experimental group was five and comparison group was composed of four members among people with mental Illness living in residential facilities to
ensure internal validity. The homogeneity of the two groups was verified by Mann-Whitney test. The intervention was only carried out on the experimental group and the change of the two groups was compared in daily living function.
After analysis, the goal of 5 clients of experiment group was achieved. The clients were maintaining the changed function on follow-up. Goal attainment scaling facilitates client¡¯s problem-solving efforts and motivation of the client toward improvement, provided by clarity of intervention objectives. This study showed that goal attainment scaling has high feasibility in the field of social work practice because goal attainment scaling make the clients to attain the goal easily and facilitate client¡¯s positive change.
